The Benefits Of Choosing A Great Camping Mattress

Since there is so much that goes into packing equipment for a camping trip, usually you will find that the focus is not on a mattress but other items that campers feel are more essential such as food and clothing. While those things are super important, choosing the right mattress is important too for a few reasons.

A Good Nights Sleep

Who doesn’t enjoy a great night’s sleep. You wake up refreshed, with a clear head and ready to start the day. Since camping requires energy and critical thinking, its imperative that you rest well during the night so you can be well rested and ready to start the day.

Decreased Soreness

There’s nothing worse than waking up sore. It affects your quality of life and can really put a hiccup in your plans, especially if you are camping or hiking. This is usually something people do not think about until it happens but factoring this into the selection of your bed will help you make a better decision.

What Makes A Great Camping Mattress?

In the midst of choosing which bedding is best for you and your partner, there are certain attributes that make up a high quality camping mattress and if you choose them according to what your personal needs are, there is no way that you can wrong in your selection.

Size

During your search, you want to make sure that you are choosing a size that accommodates you and your partner. There will be a few different factors that go into your decision. You will need to consider how tall and how heavy you two are together. Of course the taller you are the longer your mattress will need to be and the heavier you are the more sturdier it will need to be.

.Some of the longest mattresses are mid 80 inches in length. In terms of width you may want to look for 24 inches to 30 inches. Queen sized air beds are usually a great amount of space for couples.

Comfortability

Not all mattresses are created equal and there are some that are more comfortable than others but how do you know which criteria to go by to find out which one will be most comfortable for you? Being that comfort is completely subjective and it varies from person to person, you should think about what type of bedding is most comfortable for both you and your spouse. If the two of you happen to like different style mattresses it may be best to find a mattress where you can control how firm or fluffy your bed is.

Thickness

In some cases, not all, usually the thicker a mattress is, the more comfortable it is. For example, self inflating mats are usually thicker than other mattresses, which gives you more cushion. It really does not matter if you are a side sleeper, back sleeper or stomach sleeper, it’s not hard to find comfort.

Warmth

Often overlooked are the thermal components of your sleeping gear. You don’t want to start thinking about that once you are outside and you’re feeling the cold air underneath you.

Cost

When it comes to mattresses there are a few different factors that will determine whether you pay more or less. The quality of the mattress, and the size are usually the two biggest components that play a role in the pricing.

Portability

How easy you can take down and pack up your bedding is important on camping trips because in most cases, your bedding will be the heaviest piece of equipment that you will be carrying around. Having a lightweight mattress will make your trip a lot smoother.

Ease Of Use

Different mattresses comes with different ways to inflate them. Some ways are easier than others but it all depends on what is most accommodating for you and your specific situation.

  • Hand Pump

If you are not car camping and have to travel long distances to find a place to set up your campsite, it may be best to go with a hand pump. It is more work to inflate your bedding but they are very lightweight and you’ll have no problem traveling with them.

  • Electric Pump

Electric pumps are very convenient if you are car camping and your camping ground is close to your vehicle. It is heavier than a hand pump but can inflate an air mattress quickly and totally hands off.

  • Battery Powered

If you want to have the weight convenience of a hand pump and the quick inflation of an electric pump, you may want to go with an air mattress that has a pump built into it. You will find that they will usually take 4D batteries. This type of mattress is best if you do not have access to any electrical outlets but do not want to manually inflate your bed.

Reviews

There are tons of popular brands on the market and you will see experts suggest to just choose based on brand, which is not the best idea. While you do want to make sure you are dealing with a reputable brand, you also want to make sure you check out the reviews on every bed you are thinking about purchasing, to see what others have to say and to ensure you make a smart buying decision.

What Are The Different Mattress Types?

Self-Inflating

The name is pretty self explanatory. Self inflating mattresses have an open cell foam within them and when the valve is open they expand. In comparison to other mattresses they have a more comfortable and cushioned feel to them but they are not as compact and are heavier.

Air Mattress

Excellent for backpacking, air mattresses are exactly as the name implies. They are completely filled with air and while they may not be as comfortable as self-inflated mats, they are more lightweight, and compact, which allows for a less strenuous camping trip.

Foam Pads

Foam pads are just a regular style sleeping mat and is constructed of closed cell foam. There is no inflating involved, its just as simple as unrolling your mat and viola. The pro of having a foam pad over a mattress is it is extremely lightweight and portable, and you don’t have to worry about any holes deflating your bedding.

The con to foam pads are they are the least comfortable being anywhere from 1 inch – 2 inches thinner than a self inflating mat. Unlike with other style mattresses that can cover the lumps and bumps in the ground, with sleeping mats you are definitely more inclined to feel everything beneath you.

Cot

A cot is not quite a mattress for camping but it’s more of an extension of it. It comes with a metal structure that allows for your bed to be up off the ground and it makes it less likely for punctures. For all of the campers who love firm mattresses, cots may be a great choice but a downside of having one is the decreased portability. It’s not just a mattress you can roll up and fit under your backpack. If you are car camping, it is a great option, for regular camping trips that require traveling long distances, not so much.

Should You Go With A Heavier Or Lighter Air Mattress?

If comfortability is your absolute highest priority, it would be best to go with a heavier mattress. The reason that it is heavier is because the materials that are used are thicker and of higher quality which makes the mattress extra comfortable and longer lasting. This style bedding is more popular amongst people who are camping with children and who are not traveling long distances.

If you are hiking or trekking long distances and will be mobile throughout your entire trip, it is better to go with a lighter mattress because it is much more portable and convenient. Just because a mattress is lighter does not mean it can be easily damaged or it is less sturdier than a heavier one but you do want to be mindful of how you are handling it.

Conclusion

While you are searching for the perfect couples camping mattress, you will find plenty of selections, some better than others, and while there are plenty of beds to choose from there is one that stands out from the rest in terms of comfortability and overall quality and that is the [easyazon_link identifier=”B000HBIL9O” locale=”US” tag=”outdoorintensity-20″]Intex Classic Downy Airbed[/easyazon_link].

We’ve tried the Intex a few times, it’s a solid buy. Comfortable, and not too heavy to carry even for backpacking (though not very light either). Fortunately we haven’t had any problems with air leaking.
    Good review BTW
